Xabi Alonso is reportedly on the verge of being announced as the new head coach of Chelsea, with ESPN sources suggesting that he has reached an agreement to take the helm at Stamford Bridge within the next 24 hours.
The 44-year-old has been jobless since his dismissal from Real Madrid in January, where he had a brief tenure of just six months. However, sources indicate that Alonso has now secured a four-year contract with the London club.
Chelsea recently suffered a loss to Manchester City in the FA Cup final and have been without a head coach since Liam Rosenior was let go last month, just 106 days after stepping in as Enzo Maresca’s successor.
While Chelsea had also considered Andoni Iraola from Bournemouth and Marco Silva from Fulham as alternatives to Rosenior, the club’s leadership has focused on Alonso after making him their top choice. Interim coach Calum McFarlane has been managing the team in the interim.
Alonso reportedly sought clarity on the club’s transfer strategy and his authority as coach. Following discussions with BlueCo, Chelsea’s ownership, he has agreed to take on the role.
His appointment is expected to be confirmed before Tuesday’s Premier League match against Tottenham at Stamford Bridge, and he may take charge of the team depending on the timing of the announcement.
