Ronaldo, Al Nassr lose…

Cristiano Ronaldo continues his quest for a major trophy in Saudi Arabia as his team, Al Nassr, faced a narrow defeat of 1-0 against Japan’s Gamba Osaka in the AFC Champions League Two final this past Saturday.

The only goal of the match came from Gamba Osaka’s Deniz Hümmet, who found the back of the net in the 29th minute with their sole shot on target. Despite holding a significant advantage in possession and attempts on goal, Al Nassr was unable to equalize.

This loss in Riyadh marks Ronaldo’s fourth final defeat since joining Al Nassr in December 2022, with his only triumph being in the unofficial Arab Club Champions Cup in 2023.

The setback comes just five days after Al Nassr was on the brink of winning the Saudi Pro League for the first time since 2019, only to concede late in stoppage time, leaving the title race to be resolved on the final matchday this Thursday.

It was a frustrating evening for the home team. Al Nassr created numerous chances in the first half, but Gamba Osaka took the lead in the 30th minute as Hümmet found the bottom corner with a low shot from just inside the box. The goal was upheld after a lengthy VAR review for potential offside.

“I am happy to score and support the team, doing my utmost for this club,” said Hümmet, who was substituted due to injury at halftime. “I felt nervous watching the second half, but the most important thing is that we won, and I’m proud of my teammates. Now it’s time to celebrate.”

Osaka defended resolutely, making it challenging for Al Nassr’s star-studded offense to create clear opportunities.

Ronaldo nearly equalized just before halftime, but his header from a João Félix cross went wide. Félix, who joined from Chelsea in July, came even closer 13 minutes from time, hitting the post with a low shot from outside the area.

Despite these recent disappointments, Al Nassr still has a chance to secure the Saudi Pro League title, leading Al Hilal by two points heading into their final game against Damac this Thursday.
