Two-time Ballon d’Or champion Alexia Putellas has officially said goodbye to Barcelona, bringing her remarkable 14-year stint with the club to an end.
Prior to Wednesday’s 2-1 victory against Real Sociedad in the Liga F season finale, Putellas was honored on the pitch at Camp Nou by the club and her teammates.
“It’s been an incredible day filled with deep emotions. Now, it’s time for me to say goodbye and express my gratitude,” the Barcelona icon stated.
“I always aimed to give my all for every one of you. I dedicated everything I had to this club. I pushed for higher standards so that our achievements will continue in the future. My love for you all is immeasurable, both for how you’ve supported me as a person and as a player.”
During her tenure, Putellas made 507 appearances for Barcelona, netting 232 goals and playing a pivotal role in a golden era that saw the club secure 38 trophies. Her last trophy came last Saturday in Oslo, leading Barça to victory over Paris Saint-Germain to clinch their fourth Women’s Champions League title in six seasons.
“There wasn’t a single factor that influenced this decision; many nuances played a role. This is the most significant choice of my life,” Putellas clarified.
“Due to the high expectations I place on myself, both personally and professionally, and because of what Barça represents for my family and me, I felt that everything I’ve accomplished here would be overshadowed if I stayed longer. Lifting the trophy in Oslo felt like the perfect closing moment for me.”
Putellas was cheered and lifted by her teammates during the post-match celebrations and ended the night leading the fans in singing one of Barcelona’s favorite chants. “I didn’t want this to be a somber event, so I wanted to sing along with all of you,” she remarked.
The 32-year-old midfielder has not yet determined her next step in her career.
English Championship side London City Lionesses are reportedly a strong contender for her signature, with sources indicating interest from NWSL teams and Mexican clubs, as well as PSG.
