Portugal head coach Roberto Martinez has made it clear that “no one” should question Cristiano Ronaldo‘s potential participation in the 2030 World Cup, where he would be 45 years old.
Ronaldo is set to make a record sixth World Cup appearance this summer, leading Portugal in the tournament co-hosted by Spain and Morocco.
When asked about Ronaldo’s future in international football, Martinez shared with Cadena Ser radio: “No one should doubt that. He’s earned it.”
Since debuting for Portugal in 2003, Ronaldo has become the all-time leader in both appearances (226) and goals (143) for a men’s national team, and he is the only player to have scored in five World Cups.
“We aspire to share Cristiano Ronaldo’s exemplary attitude with every young footballer in Portugal because he is a true role model,” Martinez added.
At 41, Ronaldo enters this summer’s tournament with renewed confidence, having netted 28 goals to help Al Nassr clinch the Saudi Pro League title. This marks his first league championship since joining the Saudi club in 2022. Martinez is particularly impressed by Ronaldo’s unique mentality compared to other stars.

“We, the coaching staff of the national team, have concluded that Cristiano Ronaldo does not play simply to win specific titles, collective or individual,” Martinez explained.
“He is not defined by his diet; rather, it’s the hunger he embodies. Regardless of what he achieves, he wakes up the next day with the same drive to improve.”
“In my experience with players who have won Champions Leagues or Ballon d’Ors, many lose their motivation soon after. Ronaldo, however, demonstrates a distinctly different mentality.”
“I believe this relentless pursuit of goals contributes to his longevity in the sport. Naturally, there is a genetic factor, but it’s also about his dedication to maintaining his body and mindset.”
Portugal’s World Cup journey begins against DR Congo on June 17, followed by matches against Uzbekistan on June 23 and Colombia on June 27.
