FAYETTEVILLE, Georgia – Mauricio Pochettino, head coach of the U.S. men’s national team, has appointed Tim Ream as the captain for the USMNT for the upcoming 2026 World Cup.
Pochettino shared this news during his press conference prior to Sunday’s friendly match against Senegal in Charlotte, North Carolina.
“I am incredibly thankful that [Ream] is with us. He has been a fantastic captain, both on and off the field,” Pochettino stated.
“His experience and ability to lead are precisely what we need—a positive influence, both during games and in our preparation as a team. For me, establishing a connection with the players, particularly those with experience, is crucial, and Tim exemplifies that,” he added.
Pochettino noted that the decision was made in collaboration with his coaching staff, though it was largely anticipated.
Out of the 23 matches played under Pochettino, Ream has served as captain in 16 of them. The 38-year-old, who is the oldest member of the team, expressed his deep appreciation for the honor.
“Wow, I’m at a loss for words. Thank you,” Ream said. “This is beyond a dream come true. I’ve done everything I can to be part of this team and support them, and I’m truly grateful for this honor.”
“I want to be clear that this role won’t change who I am or how I contribute to the team. It’s the greatest privilege for me, being with this group and competing in the World Cup, and I won’t take it for granted.”

Pochettino also provided an update on defender Chris Richards, who is working his way back from an ankle injury. Richards was on the bench during Crystal Palace’s 1-0 victory in the UEFA Conference League final against Rayo Vallecano.
However, Pochettino confirmed that Richards would not make the trip to Charlotte for the match against Senegal and would remain at the National Training Center near Atlanta to continue his rehabilitation.
“He needs to focus on his recovery, and it’s better for him to stay here and prepare for training. We will reassess his condition next week,” Pochettino said.
When questioned about Richards’ chances of being fit for the team’s World Cup opener against Paraguay on June 12, Pochettino stated, “It’s too soon to tell.”
“The next few days will be crucial in determining whether he can be ready for the World Cup,” he added regarding Richards’ recovery.
