Liverpool appoint Iraola…

Liverpool has announced Andoni Iraola as their new head coach following the departure of Arne Slot, effective Thursday.

Iraola arrives at Anfield after a successful three-year tenure at AFC Bournemouth, where he led the team to a commendable sixth-place finish in last season’s Premier League.

The 43-year-old has signed a two-year deal, in line with his typical preference for shorter contracts throughout his coaching career.

“Liverpool is Liverpool, and there’s so much to attract you to this club,” Iraola shared on the team’s website. “The atmosphere, the supporters, the quality of the players, and the opportunity to compete for titles make this role incredibly appealing. I’m genuinely excited to begin this new chapter.”

Iraola’s hiring follows Slot’s dismissal, who managed the team for two seasons. He notably led Liverpool to a Premier League title in his first year, 2024-25, but could not replicate that success in the following season, finishing in fifth place.

According to sources, Iraola quickly emerged as the top choice for the role and was the sole candidate interviewed. Liverpool once aimed to sign him as a player and has closely followed his career, previously considering him as a potential long-term successor to Jürgen Klopp when he was with Rayo Vallecano.

Club officials have expressed admiration for Iraola’s ability to elevate Bournemouth into a formidable and entertaining outfit in the Premier League despite operating with fewer resources than many of their rivals.

Known for his capability to enhance player performance, particularly in offensive roles, Iraola’s coaching style has drawn parallels to the high-energy approach that has characterized Liverpool’s success for the past decade.

“I believe having three years of experience in the Premier League gives me an edge, and I’m sure many have seen Bournemouth play,” Iraola remarked. “While there will certainly be aspects to modify in coaching Liverpool, I do not want to lose our core identity—intensity, aggression, and organization. There are fundamentals I think will fit well with Liverpool’s established style, so I’m confident we can make it work.”

Iraola began his coaching career at AEK Larnaca in Cyprus and has also managed Mirandés and Rayo Vallecano in Spain. He took charge of Bournemouth in the summer of 2023 and has worked closely with Richard Hughes, Liverpool’s sporting director since 2024, who has facilitated Iraola’s move to Anfield.
