Leão shown red card for…

LISBON, Portugal — Portugal forward Rafael Leão received a red card for punching an opponent during a 2-0 victory over Chile in a World Cup warmup match on Saturday.

The incident occurred when Leão confronted Chile defender Ivan Román after believing he had been fouled by another player. Tensions escalated, leading to Leão throwing a punch, which prompted an angry reaction from Román. Both players were shown straight red cards just before halftime.

Cristiano Ronaldo started the match but was substituted at halftime. His replacement, Gonçalo Guedes, opened the scoring.

Bruno Fernandes added a second goal in the 75th minute, while Lucas Cepeda scored for Chile in stoppage time.

Fernandes’ goal marked his 29th for Portugal, placing the Manchester United captain in a tie with Nuno Gomes for fifth place in all-time goals for the national team.

In the upcoming World Cup, Portugal is grouped with Colombia, Uzbekistan, and Congo DR. Portugal will kick off their campaign against Congo on June 17 in Houston.

Ronaldo is poised to make his record-tying sixth appearance at the World Cup.
