Martinez: Ronaldo Not…

Roberto Martinez, the coach of the Portugal national team, mentioned that Cristiano Ronaldo is not dwelling on the possibility that Wednesday’s friendly against Nigeria could be his final game on home turf for the national team.

The 41-year-old Ronaldo aims to compete in his record sixth World Cup, seeking to secure the one major trophy that has eluded him throughout his illustrious career.

On Tuesday, Martinez praised Ronaldo, saying, “Our captain exemplifies everything with his dedication. He puts in maximum effort every single day to support the national team. The captain, along with the rest of the players, isn’t focused on what lies ahead; the future is uncertain, with injuries and unforeseen decisions beyond their control.”

“Our priority is on training, striving for excellence, implementing our strategies, and exhibiting pride in donning the national jersey. That’s the message he conveys; his only goal is to improve for our next match.”

Ronaldo holds the records for the most appearances (227) and goals (143) for a men’s national team.

Having made his Portugal debut in 2003, the Al Nassr star and Saudi Pro League champion has not revealed his retirement plans from international play.

He is anticipated to start on Wednesday in Portugal’s final warm-up match in Leiría before the World Cup.

Martinez shared, “The plan is to make eleven substitutions to ensure everyone participates. For some of our players, it will be their debut match. Our focus remains on the individuals and giving minutes to those who need it. Our main priority is to prepare the players for the World Cup.”

“Portugal excels because of our collective commitment. It is our responsibility to equip the players to support the team and utilize their talent to secure victories.”

Martinez believes that the encounter with Nigeria will serve as an excellent preparation for their World Cup opener against DR Congo on June 17. “We have a chance to examine aspects similar to what we will face against Congo. Nigeria presents a different challenge as a strong African opponent, which will help us gauge our team’s readiness.”

With an abundance of talent at his disposal, Martinez is eager to find the winning formula. “We have a group of highly skilled players with the structure and discipline necessary to win every match. The statistics are clear: goals and victories reflect our total commitment to pressing and quick defending—which is the culmination of 15 years of work in Portuguese youth football.”

“Tactically, we aim for flexibility to adapt individual talents while maintaining the team structure. We are focusing on refining our well-defined style and straightforward approach.”
