USWNT Secures Hard

Sophia Wilson played a crucial role in the second half, creating an own goal that led to a 1-0 victory for the United States against Brazil in Fortaleza on Tuesday night. The match was marked by intense physicality, culminating in Brazil finishing with nine players and receiving a total of eight red cards.

This victory provided the Americans with a sense of retribution after their 3-1 defeat to Brazil in the first of two friendlies on Sunday.

Wilson broke the scoreless tie early in the second half when her shot deflected off Isabela Chagas, resulting in the own goal.

Prior to the match, coach Emma Hayes emphasized the need for the USWNT to demonstrate greater toughness to overcome Brazil in this rematch, as she prepared her squad for challenges ahead of next summer’s Women’s World Cup.

The second half saw the Brazilian head coach and several staff members, along with Bia Zaneratto, dismissed from the game after tensions escalated in front of an enthusiastic home crowd at the Arena Castelão. Tarciane received a red card for elbowing Wilson, and two additional players were sent off after the final whistle, bringing the total number of red cards issued to eight.

The U.S. team will now take a break from international play, with their next match scheduled for November 27 against El Salvador during the Concacaf W Championship.
