Balogun Living WC Dream…

INGLEWOOD, Calif. — United States striker Folarin Balogun described his two-goal performance in Friday’s 4-1 victory over Paraguay as a “dreamy night.”

The match began with an own goal from Paraguay’s Damián Bobadilla, giving the U.S. an early lead. Balogun then scored twice before halftime, making history as the first U.S. men’s national team player to net two goals in a World Cup match since the tournament’s inception in 1930.

Pulisic subbed at halftime, ‘hoping it’s nothing’

Balogun opened his account in the 31st minute when he capitalized on a deflected pass from Christian Pulisic, scoring from 14 yards out. He added a second just before halftime, receiving a through ball from Malik Tillman, shaking off a defender, and unleashing a powerful strike into the top left corner.

Paraguay’s Maurício scored in the 73rd minute, but the night was sealed for the U.S. when Gio Reyna found the net with a stunning stoppage-time goal using the outside of his right foot.

Following the match, Balogun expressed disbelief at his achievement. “It truly feels like a dream. I haven’t fully taken it all in yet,” he said. “I’m sure when I return to my hotel, I’ll reflect on just how amazing this night has been.”

Pulisic praised Balogun’s performance, expressing his gratitude for having such a talented striker alongside him. “The kid’s incredible. He’s on fire right now,” Pulisic remarked, adding that he appreciates Balogun’s effort beyond just scoring goals, particularly against larger defenders.

Balogun’s journey to the U.S. national team has been remarkable. Earlier this year, he changed his FIFA association to represent the U.S., having been born in New York to Nigerian parents and raised in England, where he played at the youth level.

He noted the support from fans played a significant role in his decision, emphasizing, “They’ve always motivated me and shown me support. It’s important for me to give back to them.” He added, “Today was a great opportunity, and I want to continue to show the fans that I made the right choice. I’m proud to represent them.”

Throughout his brief time with the U.S. team, Balogun has had impressive performances, including a goal in the 2023 Concacaf Nations League final against Canada. However, scoring in a World Cup is a new height for the Monaco forward. “I imagined scoring in my World Cup debut, but scoring two goals surpassed that dream,” he reflected. “And the second goal was fantastic.”

After this successful opener, the U.S. team will next face Australia in Seattle before returning to SoFi Stadium to take on Türkiye to conclude the group stage.
