Christian Pulisic Trains…

IRVINE, Calif. — United States national team forward Christian Pulisic continued his recovery process at Wednesday’s training session, participating separately from the main group as he heals from a calf injury initially sustained last week and further aggravated in last Friday’s 4-1 victory against Paraguay during the World Cup Group D play.

Pulisic was first seen training in the field-side gym before moving onto the field to work individually with a member of the training staff. A U.S. Soccer representative informed ESPN that Pulisic did not participate in training at all on Tuesday, indicating that Wednesday showed some progress.

As per standard protocol, media were asked to leave after the initial 15 minutes of the session. Throughout the week, the team has expressed optimism about Pulisic’s potential recovery, with midfielder Tyler Adams commenting on Monday, “Let’s relax.”

However, with only about 48 hours left until the U.S. faces off against Australia in Seattle, concerns are growing regarding Pulisic’s availability. For perspective, one week ago, defender Chris Richards, who was recovering from an ankle injury, had already returned to full training.

U.S. defender Antonee Robinson expressed confidence that the USMNT can adapt if Pulisic is unable to play in Friday’s group stage match against Australia. “He’s not been training fully with the group yet. We’ve still got a couple of days to see where he is at,” Robinson stated. “Thankfully, we’ve got a lot of players on the bench who are eager to contribute and possess quality.”

“It’s a long tournament,” he added. “If we don’t have him for the game, we’ll ensure he’s ready for the matches ahead because we will need him, but we’re hoping for everyone to be fit.”

If Pulisic is unable to play, potential substitutes include Borussia Mönchengladbach midfielder Giovanni Reyna, América forward Alejandro Zendejas, Marseille’s Timothy Weah, and Brenden Aaronson of Leeds United.

Aaronson remarked that his approach to preparation will remain unchanged regardless of Pulisic’s situation. “I’m the type of guy that remains calm. I don’t let game emotions affect me,” Aaronson explained. “I take it day by day, and if the opportunity arises, I’m ready. I’m always prepared to start, to play hard, and to give my best, no matter the role I’m assigned.”
