HOUSTON — Graham Potter has issued a warning to Sweden’s World Cup rivals regarding the strike duo of Alexander Isak and Viktor Gyökeres, suggesting that they will only improve as the tournament unfolds.

Sweden is set to clash with Netherlands in Houston on Saturday following their impressive 5-1 victory over Tunisia in their Group F opener. Both Isak and Gyökeres scored in that match, even though it marked just their second appearance together in over a year, primarily due to Isak’s ongoing injury challenges.

When asked about whether Isak and Gyökeres are the tournament’s top strikers, Potter responded, “I can’t say for sure. I haven’t seen enough of the others to make that judgment. What matters is they are the best for us.”

“We are thrilled with their performances. They are both outstanding players, each with unique qualities. The key is getting the team to function well, enabling them to enjoy their game. If they do, they’ll pose a significant threat to any opponent,” he added.

“The challenge has been their limited time playing together, but I believe they will only get better the more they play as a unit. Their performance against Tunisia was a great start for us.”

The Netherlands currently boasts the longest unbeaten run in World Cup group matches, having gone 17 games without a loss. However, they were held to a 2-2 draw by Japan in Dallas.

Potter acknowledged the challenge of facing the Dutch: “We know we need to improve to secure a result in this match. While our win against Tunisia was a positive moment, we must respect that we’ll be up against a top-level opponent, one of the tournament favorites.”

“Right now, we’re focused on improvement. We’re working hard to prepare the players for the game. As I mentioned before the first match, we know that if we’re not on our game and cohesive, we can be beaten by any team at this level.”

“However, if we play to our strengths and remain united, we have a shot at victory, and that’s the mindset we need to maintain.”
