Julián Álvarez informed ESPN of his desire to leave Atlético Madrid this summer, as elite European clubs vie for his signature.
Previous reports from ESPN indicated that Barcelona, Paris Saint-Germain, and Arsenal have shown interest in signing Álvarez, while Real Madrid had a €150 million offer for the Argentina international rejected last month.
“I don’t think it’s the right moment to discuss this, but I also don’t want to hide,” Álvarez told ESPN’s Martin Arevalo following Argentina’s 2-0 victory against Austria in the World Cup on Monday.
“I strive to be straightforward. I have spoken with the necessary people at [Atlético]. I believe a transfer would be the best course of action for everyone involved. I want to achieve my dreams.”
At 26 years old, Álvarez did not disclose his preferred destination, but sources from ESPN indicate that he favors a move to Barcelona.
The Catalan side is in search of a striker this summer to succeed the departing Robert Lewandowski. ESPN previously highlighted in May that Álvarez was at the top of their list of priorities after securing England winger Anthony Gordon for €70 million from Newcastle United.
ESPN has also previously reported that Champions League finalists PSG and Arsenal remain interested in the former Manchester City player, while Madrid revealed they had made a €150 million offer to Atlético earlier this month.
Atlético Madrid’s management has not taken kindly to the interest in Álvarez, responding to both Barcelona and Madrid via social media. They first admonished Barça for “calculated leaks, misinformation, and ongoing disrespect,” mocking their bids for players such as Lamine Yamal, Pedri, and Raphinha.
In a similarly dismissive tone, Atlético also responded to Madrid’s offer, stating they would not “consider nor review” any proposals for Álvarez, who arrived at the club from City in a deal potentially worth up to €95 million in 2024.
