MEXICO CITY — With their place in the knockout stage already secured, Mexico players are rallying behind goalkeeping legend Guillermo “Memo” Ochoa for a potential historic start against Czechia in their final group stage match on Wednesday.
The 40-year-old Ochoa is making history by being selected for his sixth World Cup, joining fellow icons like Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo in this impressive feat.
Despite his achievement, Ochoa has not yet taken the field during this tournament, serving as the backup to Chivas goalkeeper Raúl “Tala” Rangel.
“It would be extraordinary for ‘Memo.’ He is a legend of the Mexican national team,” said winger Alexis Vega ahead of the match.
“He’s always prepared to play for the national team. Ultimately, [head coach] ‘Vasco’ will decide. All 26 of us are ready for our chance.”
If Ochoa plays against Czechia, he would become the fourth player to make an appearance in this major tournament, adding to his already historic contribution to the team.
In Mexico’s recent victories over South Korea and South Africa, Rangel has been the starting goalkeeper.
“No matter who plays, whether it’s Memo or someone else, everyone is ready for any scenario,” said midfielder Roberto “Piojo” Alvarado.
“We’d love to see Memo in goal. We know Tala is doing exceptionally well, and if Memo does start, I’m sure Tala would be supportive. The team spirit is fantastic.”
Attacking midfielder Orbelín Pineda echoed the sentiment about a potential start for Ochoa.
“We would feel proud. I’ve known Memo for a long time, and he’s not just a great player but also a wonderful person,” Pineda shared.
“He exhibits true leadership both on and off the field, and I believe all 26 of us are ready to give our best. If Memo gets his chance, he’ll definitely shine.”
Even though Mexico has already advanced, the squad is focused on not underestimating their group stage match at the iconic Estadio Azteca.
“We’re calm knowing we’re in the next round, but we don’t want to let up,” Vega said.
“We’re aiming for a win tomorrow. They’re a tough opponent, and we want to continue the good play we’ve showcased. Against [South] Korea, we did improve some defensive aspects and need to remain sharp in front of goal.”
“We haven’t achieved anything yet,” Pineda emphasized. “There’s a strong desire within the team to represent our country and give our best. We have a significant opportunity tomorrow to secure three points and then focus on one match at a time.”
After Wednesday’s game, head coach Javier Aguirre and his team will prepare for their round of 32 match back at Azteca on June 30. A win in that match would lead them back to the venue for a round of 16 clash on July 5.
