Jude Bellingham escaped a red card for covering his mouth while speaking to Jordan Ayew during England’s goalless draw against Ghana, as sources informed ESPN that the exchange was considered “non-confrontational.”
Bellingham, who plays for Real Madrid, also had a disagreement with Ghana’s coaching staff at the conclusion of the match. Despite FIFA regulations noting that a player should receive a red card for covering their mouth during a confrontation, referee Hector Said Martinez Sorto opted not to penalize him for the incident with Ayew. Details of the decision can be found here.
In contrast, Paraguay forward Miguel Almirón was the first player to receive a red card for this infraction in a match against Turkiye on Friday following a confrontation with Mert Müldür.
Despite Almirón’s case, Bellingham was not sent off, as sources stated that his conversation with Ayew lacked a confrontational nature.
Consequently, Bellingham is eligible to play against Panama in England’s final Group L match in New Jersey on Saturday.
As it stands, England leads the group, and a victory over the Central American side will ensure they secure the top position and set up a Round of 32 match against a third-place qualifier in Atlanta next Wednesday.
