Ochoas Appearance Secures…

MEXICO CITY — Goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa made his appearance during the 78th minute of Mexico‘s 3-0 victory over Czechia, marking a significant moment for the 40-year-old as he participated in his sixth World Cup.

Ochoa etched his name in history this summer by being selected for Mexico’s World Cup squad for the sixth time, and after his appearance against Czechia, he has now played in this marquee tournament on four occasions.

Currently serving as a backup to usual starter Raul “Tala” Rangel, Wednesday’s game provided Ochoa with an emotional return to the Estadio Azteca, a stadium where he gained fame for both club and country.

Upon entering the field in the 78th minute, Ochoa was met with thunderous applause from the Mexican fans, as El Tri celebrated their third consecutive win, securing a perfect start and the top spot in Group A on their route to the knockout rounds.

“As I stepped onto the pitch, so many memories and stories rushed through my mind. My first match here, lifting trophies with my club,” reflected Ochoa, who has been a key figure at the iconic Azteca stadium throughout his 15 seasons with Club América.

Ochoa initiated the sequence that led to Mexico’s third goal, a long pass that set up Álvaro Fidalgo‘s clinching strike.

“It was Memo Ochoa’s night. He deserves all the recognition he’s receiving,” stated Mexico coach Javier Aguirre post-match. “It was a fitting tribute to Memo — a Mexican player in his sixth World Cup, and I think the crowd is thrilled tonight.”

“I had a hunch that Memo would see the field, though I wasn’t sure how long he would play. Such decisions are part of a coach’s role… I wanted Mexico to celebrate the legend of Memo Ochoa, and hearing the crowd chant his name was incredible,” Aguirre added.

With this appearance, Ochoa has become the oldest Mexican player to participate in a World Cup, surpassing the previous record held by Cuauhtémoc Blanco, who was 37 during the 2014 tournament in South Africa.

“I am filled with gratitude — to the fans, my teammates, and the coach for allowing me to enjoy this moment,” Ochoa expressed.

The veteran goalkeeper indicated that he plans to retire from international play following the World Cup. He had served as a substitute in the 2006 and 2010 tournaments, while starting for Mexico in 2014, 2018, and 2022.

Having already secured the Group A title, Mexico will return to Estadio Azteca on Tuesday for a round-of-32 matchup against an opponent yet to be determined.
