Reevaluating Europes…

Reevaluating Europes…

The group stage of the 2026 FIFA World Cup is complete. We now know which countries advanced to the knockout rounds and which fell short in their quest for glory. But let’s also spotlight the clubs enjoying significant representation in this tournament.

Following the initial matches, we ranked Europe’s top teams based on their players’ performances on the international stage. Now, as we prepare for the round of 32, we revisit those rankings.

This serves as a fun way to track which clubs’ supporters still have plenty to celebrate—regardless of their national teams’ performances.

Sunderland deserves a quick mention as the only Premier League team with the most goals in the tournament (six). Meanwhile, Napoli has fallen out of the rankings since the last assessment, with their position now occupied by another club.

Note: Players are contracted to their current clubs until June 30, meaning impending free agents or those on expiring loans are still accounted for based on their contributions during the 2025-26 season. For example: Bernardo Silva remains associated with Manchester City despite officially signing with Real Madrid, and Nicolas Jackson is still credited to Bayern Munich for similar reasons.

Chelsea Logo

Chelsea is fortunate to stay in the top 10, thanks in part to Marc Cucurella‘s solid outings with Spain until July 1, when he officially transitions to Real Madrid. However, once he departs and with Reece James sidelined again, Chelsea may struggle to maintain their performance level.

For the moment, though, they’re hanging in. Key contributions include Enzo Fernández‘s strong display for Argentina, Pedro Neto continuing to play a pivotal role for a powerful Portugal side, and Caicedo’s significant contributions in Ecuador’s midfield—including tackling, effective passing, and set pieces.

Dortmund Logo

Dortmund seems to be losing momentum in this World Cup. While Nmecha has been their standout, a poor performance in Round 3 leading to a halftime substitution and Nico Schlotterbeck‘s injury saw them drop to ninth place. On a brighter note, Marcel Sabitzer scored a stunning goal in Austria’s thrilling 3-3 draw with Algeria, and goalkeeper Gregor Kobel has progressed into the knockout stage with Switzerland.

Inter Logo

Dumfries has notably been a creative force this tournament, contributing two assists in the Netherlands’ 5-1 victory over Sweden and causing an own goal in their 3-1 win against Tunisia. He is rumored to have agreed to join Real Madrid, but for now, Inter benefits from his contributions.

Other standouts include Petar Sucic, who secured Croatia’s win against Ghana with a decisive goal; Manuel Akanji, who has helped Switzerland advance; and Lautaro Martínez, who has been among the scorers for a powerhouse Argentina team.

Moreno: Spain look nothing like the team that won the Euros

Barcelona Logo

Barcelona’s Spanish contingent is playing a crucial role in the World Cup. While Pedri has consistently delivered and players like Dani Olmo and Lamine Yamal have shone at times, it’s been 19-year-old center-back Cubarsí who has truly stood out, executing a remarkable performance across all three group matches.

Additionally, France‘s right back Jules Koundé is thriving, contributing to what many consider the tournament’s strongest squad. Meanwhile, Marcus Rashford has also stepped up for England.

However, not everything has gone smoothly: Ferran Torres continues to struggle in front of goal for Spain, João Cancelo’s performances for Portugal have been inconsistent, and Brazil‘s Raphinha has picked up another injury.

Manchester City Logo

6. Manchester City (+4)
Standout star: Rodri, Spain

Manchester City experienced a significant shift in performance from the first to the subsequent rounds of matches, resulting in a rise in their ranking.

Marc Guéhi made an impressive entrance into the England lineup, contributing to a solid defense that hasn’t conceded a goal since; Rúben Dias embodied similar qualities for Portugal; Tijjani Reijnders rebounded from a rocky start to shine for Netherlands; and Nathan Aké has also found his way into the squad. The list continues.

What hasn’t changed is Erling Haaland consistently scoring whenever he plays for Norway, alongside Rodri showcasing extraordinary skills in midfield for Spain. These performances remain constant.

Burley: Norway resting players against France shows ‘defeatist attitude’

Arsenal Logo

Arsenal saw some new faces stepping up post-initial round, with England’s Bukayo Saka making his first World Cup start and Leandro Trossard leading Belgium into the knockout stage. However, Declan Rice faced an injury setback, and Ødegaard alongside William Saliba were completely rested during Norway’s 4-1 loss to France.

As a result, Arsenal’s ranking has dipped slightly, though they can still highlight players like Gabriel Magalhães from Brazil and Piero Hincapié from Ecuador who have performed well.

Liverpool Logo

Liverpool may have fewer players participating in the World Cup compared to other elite clubs, but their performance has been exceptional—all players have excelled during their appearances.

Starting with goalkeeper Alisson Becker, who has shown remarkable shot-stopping abilities for Brazil; moving through a defense led by the formidable Van Dijk for the Netherlands; and in the attack, Florian Wirtz drives the German offense while Alexander Isak has regained form for Sweden, assisting three times and scoring once.

Is Dembélé just as important as Mbappé for France?

PSG Logo

PSG ranked lowly in the initial rankings due to a slow start from club captain Marquinhos and a poor performance from Portugal against Congo DR in their opening game.

However, their fortunes have improved significantly: Portugal bounced back to win 5-0 against Uzbekistan and managed a goalless draw with Colombia, with notable contributions from Vitinha, João Neves, and especially Nuno Mendes. Willian Pacho impressed for Ecuador as they advanced, while Achraf Hakimi continued his standout performances for Morocco, assisting in their match against Haiti.

Most importantly, PSG’s attacking trio of Désiré Doué, Bradley Barcola, and Dembélé have all delivered goals and assists in commanding victories over Iraq (3-0) and Norway (4-1).

Dembélé particularly stole the spotlight in Round 3, reminding everyone of his presence with a stunning hat trick, even as fans were mesmerized by Kylian Mbappé‘s electrifying speed and Michael Olise‘s creative passes.

Bayern Munich Logo

2. Bayern Munich (-1)
Standout star: Michael Olise, France

Bayern Munich’s stay at the top of the rankings was brief. They ascended thanks to Olise’s and Dayot Upamecano‘s strong performances in France’s victory over Senegal and Germany’s crushing win over Curaçao. However, Germany has since seen a drop-off in form, particularly with Manuel Neuer drawing criticism for his play against Ecuador. Furthermore, Kim Min-Jae has struggled with his form for South Korea.

Olise and Upamecano have kept their impressive performances going, but it hasn’t been enough to maintain the first-place ranking.

Why Vinícius Jr. needs to play centrally for Brazil

Real Madrid Logo

1. Real Madrid (+1)
Standout star: Vinícius Jr., Brazil

Real Madrid’s star forwards, Vinícius Jr. and Mbappé, are both excelling on the world stage. Vinícius Jr. has been crucial for Brazil, scoring vital goals, while Mbappé has shined in France’s formidable attack, securing remarkable goals against Senegal and assisting beautifully against Norway.

Los Blancos can also highlight strong showings from Aurélien Tchouaméni in France’s midfield, Jude Bellingham’s two important goals for England, and helpful assists from Brahim Díaz for Morocco.

Additionally, it was encouraging to see young midfielder Arda Güler score as Türkiye began to find their stride in Round 3, while goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois appeared steadier post-initial round.

Overall, Real Madrid has enough representation in this World Cup, notable quality in play, and peaks in performance that secure their top spot in the ranking—and they’re set to strengthen further with Cucurella, Bernardo Silva, and Ibrahima Konaté joining on July 1.
