Nigeria did not qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which featured 48 teams and a record 10 African representatives.

However, the nation still made its mark at the event, with sixteen players of Nigerian descent showcasing their incredible talent over the past two weeks.

They were certainly heard, with players like Folarin Balogun kicking off the tournament with a spectacular two-goal performance, and Promise David stretching his limits to score against Canada in their match against Switzerland. Nigerian players have certainly made an impact at the World Cup.

Though 16 teams were eliminated after the group stages, each of these represented players delivered significant contributions to their teams’ campaigns.

Here’s a recap of how these players have performed thus far.

Balogun’s opening match against Paraguay was the standout performance of the group stage for any player mentioned here. Following an own goal by the USA, he scored twice before the break.

The first was a well-placed finish from a Christian Pulisic assist, while the second came after a brilliant run, where he evaded two defenders to curl a shot into the top corner.

This historic effort marked the first multi-goal World Cup game by an American player since Bert Patenaude in 1930, bringing Balogun within one goal of equalizing Landon Donovan’s record of three goals from the 2010 World Cup.

In the match against Australia in Seattle, he showed his playmaking skills with a driving run that resulted in a low cross, leading to an own goal by Cameron Burgess

and giving the USA the lead.

His remarkable performances earned him the FIFA Player of the Match award in both games, helping the USA secure the top spot in Group D with a game to spare.

Despite not scoring as many goals as Balogun, Olise made a significant impact in his World Cup debut against Senegal, earning Man of the Match honors with his flawless shot accuracy, four created chances, two of which were significant, and an assist that helped open the scoring, a perfectly placed pass that Kylian Mbappé converted into a milestone goal.

In the match against Iraq, he showcased even more talent, providing two assists and earning an impressive 8.9 rating as France won 3-0, totaling three assists in two games—more than any other player at that point in the tournament.

He played 65 minutes in a 4-1 victory against Norway, securing a somewhat average 6.8 rating, which is understandable in a match already decided.

Nmecha made an early impact for Germany, scoring in the first match against Curaçao by connecting with Florian Wirtz for a well-placed finish just six minutes into the game, contributing to a penalty that set the score to 3-1 before halftime.

In the following game against Ivory Coast, Nmecha’s contribution proved decisive. With the match tied at 1-1 in stoppage time, he calmly threaded a pass to Deniz Undav, who netted the match-winner in the 94th minute to secure Germany’s advancement.

Nmecha struggled in the final group match against Ecuador, being dispossessed during the first half, which led directly to Ecuador’s opening equalizer. He managed two shots on goal before being substituted in the 64th minute.

Akanji played all 270 minutes in Switzerland’s three group matches, providing stability in a defense that allowed only three goals, securing the top spot in Group B ahead of co-hosts Canada.

His experience helped the youthful Swiss defense play cohesively. In a crucial 2-1 win over Canada, he completed all but five of his passes, maintaining an impressive overall pass completion rate while effectively neutralizing Canada’s attacking maneuvers.

Musiala shone in the second half against Curaçao, scoring shortly after halftime with a well-placed shot. He played a crucial role in Germany’s attack against Ivory Coast before a controversial goal was ruled out in that match.

Despite a collective underperformance against Ecuador, he still managed an assist for Leroy Sané’s opening goal in the game.

Alaba’s notable moment came during a thrilling 3-3 draw with Algeria, where he delivered an impressive diagonal pass leading to Marko Arnautović’s opening goal.

Akanji completed 49 of his 50 passes in that match but had a mixed performance overall, struggling against Algeria’s pace at times despite being composed on the ball, particularly in the matches leading up to this clash.

He played in Austria’s tournament-opening 3-1 victory over Jordan but could not help secure a result against Argentina despite a stellar performance from Lionel Messi.

Promise David (Canada)

David, primarily a substitute for Canada, still managed to score his only goal in the 76th minute of a 2-1 defeat against Switzerland, aiding in their overall goal difference.

Nusa was part of Norway’s dominant attack in their 4-1 victory over Iraq, providing width and speed without directly scoring. He continued to impact the match against Senegal with a significant role, though Norway narrowly won 3-2.

Having already qualified, Nusa played a mere seven minutes in Norway’s 1-4 defeat to France as the coach rotated the squad.

Tani featured regularly in Canada’s offensive line, but did not manage to find the net or assist in any of their three group stage matches.

Saka, after coming off the bench in the opening victory against Croatia, quickly made an impact, assisting Marcus Rashford‘s fourth goal. He had limited minutes in subsequent matches but continued to be a player to watch as England progressed.

Madueke’s World Cup experience so far has been quieter. He started against Ghana, where he was active but unable to score, earning more impactful moments in the games against Croatia and Panama off the bench.

Okon was a standout for Bafana Bafana, playing a key defensive role throughout the tournament, helping his team achieve an unexpected round of 32 finish.

Chukwuemeka has yet to appear in any matches, remaining on the bench during the essential draw with Algeria that confirmed Austria’s advancement in the tournament.

Eze had a brief appearance in the goalless draw with Ghana, failing to make an impact during his limited time on the field.

Okafor has not yet made an appearance in any of Switzerland’s group matches, with the coaching staff preferring other attacking options.

Goodman has remained an unused substitute through all of Canada’s group stage matches, as he supports the team from the sidelines without competitive minutes logged.
