Tielemans Minimizes…

Youri Tielemans has dismissed speculation about a rift with teammate Leandro Trossard after their on-pitch altercation during Belgium‘s World Cup victory over Senegal in the round of 32.

The confrontation occurred during a hydration break in the second half while Belgium was trailing 2-0. The players were seen engaged in a heated exchange, necessitating intervention from teammates Romelu Lukaku and Nicolas Raskin. At one point, Trossard was seen pushing Tielemans.

Nonetheless, this intensity contributed to a remarkable comeback for the Red Devils. Lukaku netted a goal in the 86th minute, followed by a dramatic equalizer from Tielemans off a Trossard cross just three minutes later. In the midst of the celebration, Tielemans reached out to Trossard, lifting him up in a gesture of camaraderie.

Tielemans’ equalizing goal pushed the match into extra time, where a penalty in the 125th minute—now the latest goal in World Cup history—ensured Belgium’s advancement to the round of 16.

Reflecting on the incident with Trossard after the match, Tielemans remarked, “It’s just the emotions of the moment. We’re all competitors who want to win and represent our country with pride. That’s a natural part of football.” He reassured that there were no lingering issues, emphasizing it was just “part of the match.”

Belgium’s manager Rudi Garcia echoed Tielemans’ sentiments, expressing a desire for his team to maintain this “fighting spirit” as they progress. The victory against Senegal paves the way for a matchup against co-hosts the United States in the next round.

“It demonstrates the real spirit of our team,” said Garcia regarding the clash between Tielemans and Trossard.

World Cup VAR review: Did Belgium deserve penalty vs. Senegal?

“Players can have disagreements and heated exchanges. Leandro and Youri are both key figures for the Belgian national team; their desire to win is evident. I don’t even know what sparked the argument, but I appreciate the passion. We need players ready to fight when things aren’t going as planned, and that spirit is essential on the pitch.”
