Chicago Fire FC’s centre-back, Mbekezeli Mbokazi, has reportedly drawn interest from Nottingham Forest in the Premier League, alongside clubs from Belgium and Italy. However, ESPN sources confirm that no formal offers have been made as of yet.
The Fire acquired Mbokazi for approximately $3 million from Orlando Pirates last December. His agent, Basia Michaels from QT Sports, indicated to ESPN that Mbokazi’s camp appreciates the Fire’s commitment and is not pressuring for a deal below what they believe is fair value.
Michaels stated, “Chicago Fire have approached us, and we’ve had discussions. They are open to selling Mbokazi and won’t stand in his way if a suitable offer comes in.” She emphasized that the club is willing to engage in any necessary discussions but must also realize the fair value of their investment.
Chicago Fire confirmed this stance regarding the 20-year-old defender, who has had a strong start to his MLS career with 12 notable league appearances, as well as a captivating performance at the FIFA World Cup representing South Africa.
Director of football Gregg Berhalter stated, “As with all our players, we are open to discussions if a move presents a significant sporting opportunity for the player and aligns with the club’s long-term vision.”
Sources indicate that the Fire currently do not have any offers on the table that would lead to serious consideration of a transfer.
Mbokazi excelled for South Africa at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations shortly after his move to Chicago, where the team reached the round of 16 before being eliminated in Morocco. At the World Cup, he showcased consistent performances that contributed to Hugo Broos’ squad reaching the knockout stage for the first time.
Mbokazi is set to participate in the MLS All-Star game in Charlotte on July 29, playing alongside stars like Lionel Messi and Son Heung-min, against Mexico‘s Liga MX All-Stars.
Additionally, Mbokazi’s international teammate Relebohile Mofokeng, who plays for Orlando Pirates, has signed a four-year contract with Royale Union Saint-Gilloise in Belgium’s Jupiler Pro League.
ESPN understands that Mbokazi has garnered interest from Belgian clubs since his time at Pirates and continues to be monitored by at least two teams. However, there is no indication that serious discussions with the Chicago Fire are currently underway.
ESPN’s Jeff Carlisle contributed to this report.
