Maddy Cusacks mother…

Deborah said her daughter felt relieved yet surprised when she was offered a full-time contract to play for Sheffield United in June 2023.

The inquest heard Maddy was anxious about how she would manage both roles, especially as the combined pay was lower than before.

Deborah described the contract process as “shambolic”.

She added that players sidelined by Morgan would text one another for support to help them cope.

Deborah said that although they were sidelined, they stuck together.

She said her daughter compared the situation to being in prison — playing felt like parole and Morgan like the prison warden.

Deborah said she took her daughter to her GP, but Maddy was worried about being signed off work for mental health reasons and feared stigma. She was signed off as “generally unwell”.

The club doctor, Dr Subhashis Basu, told the inquest on Thursday that Maddy’s medical records from her time at United had been lost.

Asked by assistant coroner Sophie Cartwright KC why he hadn’t flagged this to the coronial investigation, Basu said he would have done so if asked directly.

Dean Armstrong KC, representing the Cusack family, asked why Dr Basu hadn’t approached United’s data protection officer about the loss of data.

He replied that his first step was to contact the medical records company to try to resolve the issue and that he believed he had raised it.

He later acknowledged he was slow to report it, but said he did so eventually.

The inquest is ongoing.
