England midfielder Jordan Henderson suffered a serious wrist injury while celebrating the dramatic World Cup last-16 win over Mexico, manager Thomas Tuchel said.
Henderson appeared to slip from the advertising boards at Mexico City’s Azteca Stadium, landing awkwardly, and was carried off on a stretcher.
The 36-year-old Brentford player has so far featured only for six minutes at this World Cup, coming on late in the Group L victory over Panama.
Tuchel told BBC One that Henderson fell and hurt his wrist and that it looks severe. He said the setback took some shine off the result and confirmed the midfielder is in hospital.
Henderson is being accompanied by a member of England’s support staff and will not travel back with the squad on Monday.
England’s next game is a quarter-final against Norway in Miami on Saturday at 22:00 BST, with coverage on BBC Radio 5 Live and the BBC Sport website and app.
Henderson is likely to join Reece James, who suffered a hamstring injury in the opening match, on the sidelines.
Jarell Quansah is also unavailable after his straight red card against Mexico.
