EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — After Brazil’s 2-1 defeat to Norway in the World Cup round of 16, Carlo Ancelotti expressed his determination to “continue doing our jobs.” This loss marks Brazil’s earliest World Cup exit since 1990.
Norway secured their spot in the quarterfinals thanks to two late goals from Erling Haaland, setting up a clash against either England or Mexico in Miami. A stoppage-time penalty from Neymar was merely a consolation for the five-time world champions.
Brazil’s disappointing exit signifies their worst World Cup showing since being eliminated in the group stage in 1966. However, after signing a four-year contract extension recently, Ancelotti is focused on ushering in a “new cycle” for the team.
“We will continue our work and explore new ideas,” stated Ancelotti. “While this is a tough experience and a disappointing result, I am grateful for my players’ hard work. I don’t believe we deserved to lose, but we must accept it.”
“That’s football; sometimes you have to deal with the sadness and bitterness of defeat. I’m accustomed to that, and we must transform this defeat into motivation for the new cycle ahead.”
He added, “Everyone is deeply saddened, including the fans, which is a normal reaction. Our focus now is on how to respond to this.”
As Brazil begins to rebuild, Ancelotti emphasized the need for new talent in midfield. Neymar has announced his retirement from international football, while Casemiro and Fabinho are expected to follow suit.
“We must think about the future,” he noted. “It is clear we need to make some adjustments in midfield.”
“We require young talent and high-caliber players to join Brazilian football. This national team has a solid core of great players, as well as promising newcomers.”
A missed penalty from Bruno Guimarães in the first half was pivotal to Brazil’s defeat. However, Ancelotti explained that “statistics” indicated that Guimarães was the optimal choice for the penalty.
“We analyzed the players’ statistics, and according to that, Raphinha would have been the best penalty-taker,” Ancelotti clarified. “Raphinha, followed by Neymar, and then Bruno Guimarães were our top choices. Given the situation, we selected Bruno because we believed he was the best option.”
