Álvarez on Mexico KO: It…

Captain of Mexico, Edson Álvarez, expressed that the team’s elimination from the World Cup is a “deep hurt,” but remains optimistic about the future.

The co-hosts faced a tough 3-2 defeat against England in a dramatic round-of-16 match held in Mexico City on Sunday.

Speaking to TUDN after the game, Álvarez said, “We gave everything against a strong opponent, and we never felt inferior. We consistently fought for what we believed was rightfully ours. Losing hurts deeply because this team is like family – a remarkable group from beginning to end.”

The Mexican squad had aimed to reach their first World Cup quarterfinal since 1986.

Despite the loss, there were several positive takeaways from the tournament.

Javier Aguirre’s team restored faith in the national squad, achieving four consecutive wins at a World Cup for the first time while maintaining a clean sheet throughout the tournament.

Gilberto Mora, the youngest player at the World Cup at just 17 years and 240 days, played in three of Mexico’s five matches, including the recent defeat.

“There were many doubts about this squad from the beginning, yet we persevered until the end,” Álvarez noted. “I believe this is the direction we should take, considering the immense talent we possess.”

Following Mexico’s exit, President Claudia Sheinbaum offered her support to El Tri.

Sheinbaum encouraged the players to “keep moving forward” and highlighted Mexico’s spirit and hospitality as a co-host of the World Cup.

On social media, she said, “Stay positive! Sometimes you win, sometimes you learn; the key is to keep progressing and represent Mexico with pride. The achievements of the young national team players will forever be remembered by the Mexican people. We demonstrated to everyone that Mexico is the best host in the world, united and joyful. Let’s go, Mexico – forever!”

Mexico will enter a new era with Rafa Marquez, who is set to take over from Aguirre as head coach.

Marquez, a legend of El Tri, has been serving as Aguirre’s assistant since August 2024.
