Carlos Queiroz resigns as…

Carlos Queiroz has resigned as Ghana’s head coach just three months after his April appointment, stepping down following the team’s World Cup elimination in the last 32.

The 73-year-old guided the Black Stars to third place in Group L before a 1-0 defeat to Colombia ended their campaign in the first knockout round. The former Manchester United assistant was managing at his fifth straight World Cup, having previously led Iran, Portugal and Egypt at major tournaments.

On the same day, Jordan also parted company with head coach Jamal Sellami after finishing fourth in Group J.

In a statement on social media, Queiroz called his short tenure a journey of “pride,” saying Ghana had regained “respect and credibility” on the world stage. He added that long-term success must be built off the pitch by creating the right environment to prepare, protect and develop Ghana’s outstanding talent.

Although Ghana advanced from the group stage—with a win over Panama, a draw against England and a loss to Croatia—their tactics drew criticism as they scored two goals and conceded three across four matches. Queiroz nevertheless commended his players and staff for their “courage, commitment and unwavering dedication.”

The Black Stars return in September for 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying. Drawn in Group C with Ivory Coast, The Gambia and Somalia, they will aim to reach the finals in East Africa after missing the 2025 tournament—their first Afcon absence since 2004.
