Argentina’s manager, Lionel Scaloni, emphasized the challenges of the 2026 World Cup, noting that even the tournament favorites are struggling against lower-ranked teams. “This World Cup is proving difficult for everyone; there’s no standout dominant team. While France has looked strong, they faced challenges from Paraguay,” Scaloni said during a press conference ahead of Argentina’s round of 16 match against Egypt on Tuesday in Atlanta.
He continued, “Spain struggled until the very end. No team has been able to consistently perform as they did prior to the tournament. Opponents are playing well, and the conditions are different from what we’ve seen before. Players have faced many matches, and it’s taking a toll.”
Argentina secured their place in the round of 16 with a dramatic 3-2 victory over Cape Verde in extra time, clinching the win with an own goal in the 111th minute in Miami, Florida. La Albiceleste had previously won all three group stage matches against Algeria, Austria, and Jordan, topping Group J.
Scaloni confirmed that Lionel Messi is in excellent physical condition for his 30th World Cup match, which will extend his record for most appearances. “Leo is fine. He didn’t report any issues despite playing 120 minutes recently at 39,” Scaloni noted.
Despite the tournament’s challenges and Egypt as an opponent, Scaloni believes Argentina should still be viewed as a contender. “This team has been a candidate wherever it goes and consistently plays well, even when faced with difficulties.”
“Our performance has been solid. We’ve won all four matches, which is something to be pleased about, although there are still areas to improve,” Scaloni added. “We’re aware that Egypt is a strong team. They boast experienced players and a coach who has been with them for a considerable time.”
Egypt’s star player, Mohamed Salah, will face Argentina for the first time as he aims to lead his team to their best-ever World Cup performance. Scaloni remarked, “Salah is a tremendous player, and it will be a pleasure to come up against him. This team has faced many great players before, and we take collective precautions.”
The winner of Tuesday’s match will face either Colombia or Switzerland in the next round.
