La Liga chief slams…

La Liga chief Javier Tebas has condemned what he sees as a widespread silence around Fifa after United States forward Folarin Balogun was controversially allowed to avoid a suspension at the 2026 World Cup.

Balogun featured in the 4-1 last-16 loss to Belgium after Fifa’s disciplinary committee postponed his one-match ban for 12 months.

Uefa, which has frequently clashed with Fifa, sharply criticised the ruling on Monday, calling it without precedent, baffling and indefensible.

Outside Europe, football authorities have largely stayed quiet on the matter.

South American confederation Conmebol released a statement supporting referee Raphael Claus after US president Donald Trump described the Brazilian official as “a bit suspect”.

However, Conmebol did not rebuke Fifa or Trump, who said he requested a review of the ban.

Claus was the official who sent off Balogun against Bosnia-Herzegovina following a VAR check.

Tebas argued the Balogun episode is merely the most visible example of a pattern he believes has undermined confidence in Fifa and the sport for years.

The 63-year-old claimed Fifa operates as a closed circle, with outcomes effectively decided before any vote and without proper consultation with domestic leagues.

He added on X that many in football know this yet remain silent because it is easier than standing up for independence, transparency and sound governance.

Tebas said world football needs institutions that are accountable, rule-abiding and transparent—rather than making unilateral, discretionary decisions that erode trust among fans, clubs, leagues and players.
