Manchester United are in advanced negotiations to sign Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa, according to sources.

United are prepared to activate a £35 million ($47m) release clause in the Belgian midfielder’s contract. While Villa is eager to retain the 29-year-old, sources indicate that Tielemans has expressed a desire to move to Old Trafford.

During his three years at Villa Park, Tielemans played a pivotal role in last season’s Europa League victory. He also showcased his talent at the World Cup, scoring twice in Belgium’s thrilling 3-2 victory over Senegal during the round of 32.

He is expected to join Andrey Santos as part of United’s summer midfield overhaul. United officially confirmed the signing of the former Chelsea midfielder on Monday.

According to sources, the fee for Santos’ transfer was about £48 million ($64m), with an additional £2 million in possible add-ons.

Goalkeeper Karl Darlow is also close to signing with United from Leeds United, providing competition for first-choice goalkeeper Senne Lammens.

ESPN sources state that United are no longer pursuing a transfer for Atalanta midfielder Éderson. The clubs had agreed on a £35m ($47m) fee for the Brazilian prior to the World Cup, but the deal is now stalled.

United’s representatives have not disclosed the exact reasons for the delay but have not dismissed the possibility of reopening discussions later this summer.
