World Cup 2026: Mistaken…

Switzerland forward Breel Embolo became the first player dismissed under a new mistaken-identity rule at this summer’s World Cup.

Already on a booking from the first half, Embolo was sent off in the 72nd minute of his team’s quarter-final loss to Argentina after receiving a second yellow card for simulation.

Referee Joao Pinheiro had initially cautioned Argentina’s Leandro Paredes for what seemed a clumsy foul, before VAR advised a review.

After checking the monitor, the referee ruled Embolo had dived.

The Swiss striker was devastated to be shown red, especially with his side having equalised against the defending champions just five minutes earlier.

The 29-year-old left the field in tears in Kansas City, consoled by team-mates.

“There was definitely no reason for a yellow card,” said Switzerland coach Murat Yakin. “It was a harmless situation; play should have continued.

“We were punished by a rule that’s unacceptable. I don’t understand it. Their unnecessary intervention is extremely hurtful — it has nothing to do with football.

“It ruined our game. We have to accept it, but losing like this is painful.”

Pundits offered little sympathy for Embolo, who plays for French side Rennes.

“I feel for Embolo’s team-mates, not for him. He may have cost them a place in the semi-finals,” said former MLS striker Bradley Wright-Phillips on ITV.

Ex-Jamaica international Jobi McAnuff added: “Breel Embolo let himself down and let his team-mates down.

“Everything looks worse in slow motion, and he ends up booked for simulation. Maybe he expected contact that never came.

“It was a dive, but you can’t help feeling sorry for him.”

Argentina eventually won 3-1 in extra time against 10 men and will face England in the semi-finals, a match to be shown live on the BBC.

“This team has so much passion. Even a man down, we gave everything. I’m extremely proud of everyone,” Yakin said.
