Matt Freese: USMNT…

Goalkeeper Matt Freese of the United States men’s national soccer team expressed his disappointment over the criticism following the team’s exit from the 2026 World Cup, where they suffered a 4-1 defeat to Belgium in the round of 16.

Freese told ESPN, “It’s hard to hear that criticism because if people could see this group on a daily basis and understand how much we wanted it, they would recognize my own deep desire as well. Two years ago, I was literally dreaming of this moment and felt the immense honor and responsibility that accompanied it. We wanted this more than anything, aiming to reward the support we received with something truly special. Throughout the World Cup and the months prior, it was the only thing on my mind.”

The USMNT kicked off by topping Group D with two wins and a loss, successfully defeating Bosnia-Herzegovina 2-0 in the round of 16. However, their loss to Belgium sparked narratives questioning the team’s heart and determination.

Reflecting on the aftermath of their elimination, Freese said, “It felt surreal that the tournament ended for us. I didn’t want that journey to be over, especially not the memory of singing ‘Country Roads, Take Me Home’ together at home with our fans. I longed to experience that connection with my teammates and family on the field once more. It was heartbreaking.”

“The intensity of our desire and commitment to perform at our best was immense, and it pains me to see that people are unaware of this truth. I wish I could engage with each person individually to express my feelings about it.”

Freese noted that the entire team will channel the pain of their World Cup exit into motivation for improvement and resilience.

“We are determined to transform this elimination into motivation,” Freese stated. “All of us have the drive to achieve something greater and come back stronger. It’s about using this setback as fuel for our fire. While it’s straightforward to turn it into motivation, it doesn’t lessen the hurt of elimination.”

Freese is eager to return to the field with New York City FC on July 22, viewing it as an opportunity to elevate his game.

“The first thing I feel is a hunger for the field again. My immediate goal after the World Cup was to return, not just to do it again, but to do it better and go further to win that trophy,” he explained.

As for the future, there are lingering questions about whether Mauricio Pochettino will remain at the helm leading up to the 2030 World Cup, as his contract with U.S. Soccer concluded after the 2026 tournament.

“I would love for him to stay; I truly want to continue working with him. He provided me with an incredible opportunity, and I am grateful for that. He has instilled belief in this team and this country.”

“I would be thrilled to keep working with him. He is a world-class coach, and I know many clubs will be eager to sign him. As a player, I can’t predict what will happen next.”

Sources have previously indicated that positive discussions have taken place between Pochettino and U.S. Soccer regarding a possible contract extension.
