ATLANTA — Harry Kane stated that it’s premature to determine if this World Cup will be his last with England, reflecting on Tuesday’s 2-1 semifinal defeat to Argentina as yet another disappointing near-miss.
England initially took the lead in the 55th minute through Anthony Gordon, but shifted to a defensive setup, allowing Argentina more possession and the chance to equalize in the 85th minute courtesy of Enzo Fernández.
Then, just two minutes into injury time, Lautaro Martínez netted the decisive goal, heading in a cross from Lionel Messi.
“It feels like a continuation of previous tournaments,” Kane remarked post-match. “We handled the game’s momentum well for about 60 minutes, scored, and took the lead. However, for some reason, we found it difficult to maintain control and allowed them to create more chances in our final third.”
“It’s natural to try to cling to a one-goal advantage, but with 20 minutes remaining, there’s always time for them to score,” he reflected. “We’ll need to review the match and identify how we can improve in these critical moments, as this has been a recurring issue over the last four tournaments.”
Kane led England in the 2018 World Cup, where they reached the semifinals, captained them to the 2021 Euros final, and saw them into the quarterfinals of the 2022 World Cup. Most recently, England reached the Euros final again two years later but fell short against Spain.

Kane will be 36 by the next World Cup, and he maintains that it is too early to speculate on whether it will be his last. “It’s premature to discuss that,” he commented. “I’m focused on the present, and representing my country is what brings me the greatest pride.
“Four years is a long time, and I’m turning 33 this summer. Just look at Leo; he’s still excelling at the highest level. I don’t want to limit myself in any way. I’ll tackle situations as they arise, but for now, I just need to process this tough defeat.”
Dan Burn, the England defender, described the team as too tentative in the closing moments of the game.
As England led 1-0, coach Tuchel made substitutions, bringing on Ezri Konsa for Anthony Gordon, Nico O’Reilly for Declan Rice, and Burn for Reece James.
The tactical change shifted England to a back five, granting Argentina the momentum and opportunity to score the equalizer and the winning goal.
“I’m absolutely devastated,” Burn expressed to the BBC. “I believe we executed our game plan well for the majority of the match. However, once we scored, we became passive and allowed ourselves to be punished for it.”
“We likely gave away too many chances; when you do that, you risk conceding goals. This is disappointing for us, especially after getting so close to the World Cup final. That stings.”
