Authorities have announced heightened security for Wednesday’s World Cup semi-final between England and Argentina at Atlanta Stadium. The fixture revives one of international football’s classic rivalries, with England aiming to topple the holders and reach their first World Cup final since 1966.
Atlanta police say they are mindful of historic tensions between the nations. In 1982, the United Kingdom and Argentina fought the 74-day Falklands War, which left 649 Argentine troops, 255 British personnel and three civilians dead. The Falkland Islands—known in Argentina as Las Malvinas—remain the focus of an ongoing sovereignty dispute.
The Atlanta Police Department said it has strengthened its citywide safety posture, deploying additional officers and resources in and around event venues, entertainment districts, and other busy areas to deter crime and help ensure a safe experience for residents and visitors.
Following Argentina’s 3-2 last-16 victory over Egypt, some players were filmed singing a chant that referenced the islands as well as Argentina legends Diego Maradona and Lionel Messi.
