EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — Argentina’s manager, Lionel Scaloni, indicated he needs time to reflect on his future following the expiration of his contract at the end of 2026.
The team suffered a 1-0 defeat in the FIFA World Cup final, with Ferran Torres scoring in the second half of extra time, marking Spain’s second triumph in the world’s premier football tournament.
In the wake of the match, Scaloni, who previously guided Argentina to victory in the 2022 World Cup and the 2021 and 2024 Copa América, remained uncertain about his path ahead.
“I will discuss my future with the president of the Argentine football federation, but I have a general idea of what I want,” Scaloni stated after the loss. “I will fulfill my contract and evaluate afterward.
“Truthfully, I feel the need to contemplate, as I’m not sure if we can replicate such a remarkable achievement. We’ll need to have discussions. I am thankful to the AFA president for this opportunity. Being in this position is a dream for everyone. We pushed until the last moment, and both the coaching staff and players gave their all. I believe it’s important for me to take the time to reflect.”
Emotional during the latter part of the press conference, Scaloni reminisced about his journey with Argentina, having first stepped in as interim manager in 2018 for two friendly matches against Guatemala and Colombia.
After securing a permanent role, he led Argentina to their 2022 championship and signed another contract extension in 2023, committing to the national team through 2026.
“This is a fantastic place. Moving forward, we require various things,” Scaloni remarked. “We need to reset and build another group like this one, which is challenging to recreate. It pains me deeply. I apologize.”
He finished by expressing his heartfelt appreciation for the players and the nation for their backing throughout the World Cup campaign, stating: “I have to thank this group of players; they have been incredible fighters.”
Scaloni’s team seemed to struggle towards the end of what had been a remarkable journey to the final, featuring three significant comebacks in the knockout stages against Cape Verde, Egypt, and England, compounded by an aging roster with eight of the starting eleven having participated in the 2022 final win.
Even the legendary Lionel Messi, who had his first shot on goal at the 117th minute, could not rescue Argentina from a relentless Spain team that dominated possession and overwhelmed them throughout 120 minutes of play.
“I never imagined, nor did anyone in our coaching staff, that we would find ourselves in this position,” Scaloni said. “To go forward, many things are needed.”
