Claudio Tapia, president of the Argentina Football Association, paid heartfelt homage to captain Lionel Messi for his remarkable contributions to the national team.
The defending champions, Argentina, lost 1-0 in extra time to Spain during Sunday’s final in New Jersey.
Messi, who made history by becoming the first player to start three World Cup finals, was unable to find the back of the net against Spain, despite having previously excelled with eight goals and four assists throughout the tournament.
Tapia shared an emotional photo of Messi on the MetLife Stadium pitch after receiving his runners-up medal and expressed: “A story that will last forever. Words cannot truly capture our gratitude for everything you have given us, captain. Your football, your steadfast leadership both on and off the pitch, and for inspiring an entire nation to dream and fight until the very last moment.”
Following the match, Messi, now 39, did not stop to address the media as he exited MetLife Stadium after achieving his 205th cap for the Albiceleste. It’s uncertain whether this marks his final appearance in an Argentina jersey.
The Inter Miami forward previously led Argentina to World Cup victory in the 2022 final against France, following consecutive Copa América titles in 2021 and 2024. Throughout the tournament, Messi increased his international goals to 125, ranking just behind Cristiano Ronaldo‘s tally of 146.
“Thank you for every joy you brought to our hearts, for every proud tear shed, and for raising our flag high on the global stage,” Tapia continued.
“You are eternal, Leo. You are a legend. You brought happiness to our nation, and this home—you’re home—will cherish you forever. Thank you for everything. Yours forever.”
Tapia also recognized Argentina’s coach, Lionel Scaloni. Having led the national team since 2018, Scaloni mentioned after the loss that he would take time to contemplate his future, with his contract set to expire at the end of 2026.
On Instagram, Tapia shared an image of himself embracing Scaloni following Sunday’s match, stating: “You are incredible. We are proud of your dedication, hard work, and love for this national team.”

Tapia also paid tribute to goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez, who was named the best goalkeeper at the 2022 World Cup. Martinez, 33, made 11 saves against Spain, a record for a World Cup final.
“You are the best in the world, and words cannot express our gratitude,” he wrote on Instagram. “Thank you for allowing us to touch the sky, for the unforgettable moments you created in Qatar, and for your continuous efforts here in the United States.”
