If Pep Guardiola were ready to step back into management, would the English Football Association move for him?
England have just finished third at the World Cup, their best men’s finish since winning the title in 1966.
Even so, head coach Thomas Tuchel drew heavy criticism after the 2-1 semi-final defeat to Argentina, with many feeling his defensive substitutions contributed to surrendering a 1-0 lead.
Tuchel, 52, agreed a two-year extension in February after taking charge in January 2025 and still has the FA’s backing.
However, former England captain Wayne Rooney suggested the FA might try to bring in Guardiola if he becomes available.
Speaking on The Wayne Rooney Show after the loss to Argentina, he argued Guardiola is the standout option if the FA were to make a change.
Rooney added that, were Tuchel to be dismissed, there are few—if any—managers who would be an upgrade on him, aside from Guardiola.
The FA had sounded out Guardiola before appointing Tuchel, with reports suggesting there was a verbal agreement, external in place, though he remained at Manchester City.
Over a decade in England, Guardiola won 20 trophies: six Premier League titles, three FA Cups, five League Cups and three Community Shields.
He also claimed the Champions League in 2023, followed by the Uefa Super Cup and the Fifa Club World Cup.
