Previously, sources indicated that the Manchester City star was not included on Madrid’s shortlist of summer targets. Concerns regarding his injury history from president Florentino Pérez and new manager José Mourinho’s preference for a different type of midfielder contributed to this decision.
Having recently returned to form—demonstrating his skill that once earned him the 2024 Ballon d’Or—Rodri played a pivotal role in Spain’s World Cup triumph. Some key executives at Madrid are now reconsidering the possibility of bringing him on board.
However, ESPN has not confirmed any ongoing discussions between Madrid and City regarding a transfer.
Rodri celebrated his 30th birthday last month, and his recovery from a knee ligament injury sustained in September 2024 has been progressing slowly.
While Pérez has expressed admiration for Rodri, he remains hesitant about pursuing the midfielder due to lingering doubts about his fitness.
In recent years, Madrid has experienced issues with veteran players like David Alaba and Dani Carvajal, who struggled to recover from significant knee issues.

However, Rodri’s outstanding performance at the World Cup, where he was recognized as the tournament’s best player during Spain’s knockout stage run—including victories against France in the semifinals and Argentina in the final—has shifted opinions among some Madrid executives. Notably, director general José Ángel Sánchez and chief scout Juni Calafat are now proponents of signing Rodri.
Though Mourinho has been skeptical, suggesting a different type of player might better fit his intended style, sources indicate this concern could be navigable.
Madrid has already made unexpected moves with other targets this summer, adding Ibrahima Konaté and Bernardo Silva despite previously dismissing the notion of their acquisitions. Mourinho’s arrival has sparked a change in strategy.
