Liverpool and the Jeff…

Right now, Liverpool fans are facing more uncertainty than clarity.

Since acquiring the club in October 2010—when it was still New England Sports Ventures—Fenway Sports Group has largely acted as a steady, dependable steward.

Under the American owners, Liverpool have enjoyed sustained progress on and off the field. Since 2019, the club has lifted two Premier League titles as well as the Champions League, FA Cup, League Cup, Super Cup and Club World Cup.

Inevitably, the idea of fresh investors—and the new strategies they might bring—invites scrutiny, particularly if they are newcomers to elite sport.

Liverpool supporter Neil Atkinson, CEO of The Anfield Wrap, told BBC Sport that it’s appropriate to ask tough questions whenever anyone seeks a financial stake in a Premier League club.

He questioned what the attraction is for extremely wealthy individuals, noting that even Liverpool’s annual turnover—let alone profit—would barely register for them.

Atkinson suggested there isn’t a single answer: for some, such as the Mittal family, holding minority positions in several sports worldwide might be more appealing than looser partnerships, not least because equity retains asset value.

He added that if people keep pressing the “why” at such lofty price points, the underlying motives should become clearer in time.

Nearly four years after FSG weighed a potential sale of the 20-time English champions, the possibility of new investment also prompts speculation about whether this could be part of a longer-term path toward an eventual exit from Anfield.
