The International Olympic Committee says it will not probe Gianni Infantino, judging a complaint against the Fifa president to be beyond its remit.
Human rights group FairSquare reported Infantino to the IOC, alleging he violated the charter’s political neutrality by offering support for the US president through statements or other clear expressions.
During the World Cup, US President Donald Trump said he had called Infantino to ask for a review of a red card shown to US striker Folarin Balogun.
The forward had been set to miss the last-16 match against Belgium after being sent off in a 2-0 win over Bosnia-Herzegovina.
Following Trump’s intervention, the one-match suspension was deferred for 12 months. No explanation was provided beyond citing a rule that allows sanctions to be suspended.
Balogun started the game, which Belgium won 4-1.
Infantino has served as an IOC member since 2020.
Section two of the Olympic Charter says IOC members must not accept instructions from governments, organisations, or others that could compromise the independence of their actions or votes.
The IOC said the complaint against Infantino is outside the ethics commission’s jurisdiction.
It added that the complaint concerns Fifa’s internal governance and management, including dealings with governments, and the application of its sport’s rules—matters that fall beyond the IOC code of ethics.
The IOC’s statement followed reports that the Norwegian Football Federation is considering a formal complaint to Fifa’s ethics committee over the decision to suspend Balogun’s automatic ban.
NFF president Lise Klaveness told the BBC the federation had reacted with “strong concern” and would decide at its next board meeting whether to proceed with a complaint.
The federation has already lodged a complaint about Fifa awarding its first Peace Prize to Trump.
Fifa has been asked for comment.
