NASHVILLE — Andoni Iraola quickly found himself facing a new challenge as Liverpool’s manager. In his debut match, Liverpool secured a 4-2 victory over Sunderland in preseason. However, the game highlighted a pressing issue for the Reds just four weeks before the start of the Premier League season: Joe Gomez sustained an injury just eight minutes in, emphasizing the urgent need for reinforcements.

During his first press conference as Liverpool’s head coach, Iraola recognized the importance of bolstering his squad in the upcoming transfer window. He reiterated this need while at the team’s preseason training camp in Chicago, highlighting the requirement for a new winger and options to fortify a “very thin” defense.

The need for defensive depth became glaringly apparent on Saturday, as new signing Jérémy Jacquet was ruled out pre-match due to a minor issue. Sources indicated that the absence was precautionary, intended to allow Jacquet to regain his fitness after missing the latter half of the previous season with a shoulder injury from his time at Rennes.

Jacquet’s absence left Gomez as the only senior center back, and when Gomez had to come off, it resulted in the teenage duo of Mor Talla Ndiaye and Ifeanyi Ndukwe, both newly signed for the academy, stepping in at the heart of the defense.

Fortunately for Iraola, captain Virgil van Dijk will return soon, having been left out of the touring squad due to the significant workload he endured last season. In addition to Jacquet, Giovanni Leoni, signed from Parma last summer, is another promising young talent in defense.

Despite being seen as promising, neither Leoni nor Ndukwe has made a Premier League appearance yet, with Leoni still recovering from an ACL injury sustained during his debut against Southampton last September. The recent free transfer of Ibrahima Konaté to Real Madrid has further stripped the defense of experience—which will become critical if Gomez’s injury is serious.

“The injury to Joe is probably the worst news we could get,” Iraola stated to LFCTV after the match. “We were pleased not to lose any players in training and then unfortunately we lost Joe early on.

“With Jeremy, we chose to be cautious. He’s been out for a long time, but he’s training well and we’ll ease him back in. He should be available for the last match of this US tour. We were optimistic, but now we’ve lost one player.”

Sources have indicated that Liverpool did not see the need to prioritize signing a center back following Konaté’s departure, although this perspective may change depending on the severity of Gomez’s injury. Even with a quick recovery, Gomez’s injury history is concerning, especially since both he and Van Dijk—who turned 35 recently—have just one year left on their contracts.

Last season, Liverpool’s defensive struggles played a significant role in Arne Slot’s dismissal as head coach. Iraola is likely aware that failing to make at least one defensive signing this summer could leave him at risk of experiencing a similar fate.

Nevertheless, there were bright spots for the new Liverpool manager in the match against Sunderland. Forward Kieran Morrison excelled in attack and earned a well-deserved goal to contribute to the victory.

Returning from loan spells at Birmingham City and Hull City, Wales international Lewis Koumas also found the back of the net, while Harvey Elliott showed promise on his first appearance after a challenging loan at Aston Villa.

The introduction of Dominik Szoboszlai, who signed a new five-year contract last week, added much-needed quality to the team, contributing an assist and an impressive goal. Szoboszlai has notably demonstrated leadership during training in Chicago and took up the captain’s armband when he was substituted.

Liverpool will also welcome Alexander Isak, Florian Wirtz, and Ryan Gravenberch this week, as they prepare to join the squad for Wednesday’s match against Wrexham in New York.

“They’re already in Chicago, waiting for us,” Iraola said. “I hope we can integrate them effectively and gradually improve the areas that need work.”

As Iraola works to mold a developing squad into serious contenders for both the Premier League and European competitions, he will undoubtedly hope for additional signings to expedite the process.
