Lucas Bergvall, who arrived at Spurs from Swedish side Djurgården in 2024, saw only limited playing time at the end of last season under Roberto De Zerbi.
The 20-year-old started De Zerbi’s first match in charge — a 1-0 defeat at Sunderland — and then made four further substitute appearances.
Since then, Tottenham have reinforced midfield with Sandro Tonali in a £100m move from Newcastle United and Mateus Fernandes for £85m from West Ham.
De Zerbi said he has not yet spoken to Lucas but will do so in the coming days, stressing they will choose the best option for the club and the player, and describing Bergvall as a major talent.
He added that competition for places will be intense, aiming for two players per position.
If Bergvall wants to stay, De Zerbi would welcome it; otherwise, he said a solution would be found with sporting director Johan Lange and chief executive Vinai Venkatesham, noting that once a departure is decided it becomes a club matter.
Tottenham have also added defenders Jan Paul van Hecke, Andy Robertson and Marcos Senesi, with De Zerbi explaining the next aim is to complete the attacking options.
He said the transfer business is not finished and expects to bring in a couple more players, give or take.
Bergvall is part of Tottenham’s squad in New Zealand, while wingers Mohammed Kudus (thigh) and Dejan Kulusevski (knee) have stayed behind as they continue recovery from long-term injuries.
De Zerbi indicated Kudus is close to returning and should be ready to resume work with the team once they are back in London. Kulusevski will be assessed over the next few weeks, with caution a priority after a full season out.
Meanwhile, attacking midfielder Xavi Simons reflected on the anterior cruciate ligament injury he suffered in April, saying the first four days after it were the worst of his life.
The Netherlands international required surgery on the serious knee injury and missed the 2026 World Cup.
He recalled struggling to sleep and eat during the first week and being in severe pain, experiencing vomiting and dizziness. He said he wouldn’t wish that pain on anyone, but added he is now in a good place.
