Defending NWSL champions Gotham FC announced on Monday that they have mutually agreed to terminate the contract of Esther González as the Spanish forward “temporarily steps away from soccer to address personal matters in Spain.”
González was a finalist for the 2025 NWSL MVP award and currently stands as the team’s top scorer this season with six goals, as well as the leading scorer in the club’s history with 30 regular-season goals.
“Gotham FC will always hold a very special place in my heart,” González expressed in a statement.
“From the moment I arrived, I felt something unique about this club — the people, the environment, and the way everyone collaborates every single day. I am thankful for every moment shared with my teammates, coaches, and each person affiliated with this club.”
The 33-year-old recently triumphed with Spain in the 2023 World Cup before joining Gotham FC. Delving into her achievements with the team, she played a pivotal role in securing their first NWSL Championship, netting the decisive goal in the final. Last season, she contributed 13 goals to help Gotham capture another championship.
Her accolades also include helping Gotham clinch the inaugural Concacaf W Championship in 2025, which qualified the club for the first FIFA Women’s Club World Cup in 2028.
“We send our best wishes to Esther and her family as they return to Spain,” remarked Gotham president of soccer operations Yael Averbuch West. “Esther has exemplified professionalism both on and off the field, contributing to our four major trophies and serving as a respected leader. We are grateful for her three years filled with extraordinary moments and will always support Esther in her future endeavors.”
This unexpected announcement of the mutual termination comes merely nine days after González scored two late goals, leading Gotham to a stunning 3-2 victory after being down 2-0 in the 80th minute.
She was absent from Friday’s 2-2 draw with the Portland Thorns due to what the team referred to as an excused absence.
Gotham is currently navigating significant changes. Forward Sam Kerr, who shares a similar role as González, joined the team via free transfer in July on a long-term deal.
Additionally, the team awaits updates on defender Emily Sonnett, who sustained a non-contact left knee injury moments after the match against Portland started.
Head coach Juan Carlos Amorós just began a five-week paternity leave following the birth of his second child in May. Meanwhile, González and her partner welcomed their first child in January.
In her farewell statement, González reflected: “This journey has exceeded every expectation I held when I first joined Gotham. Together, we accomplished everything possible, and I will always be proud to say that I won it all with this club. However, more than the trophies, Gotham is where I grew immensely — both as a player and as a person. It is here, in New Jersey, that my family has also grown.”
