Southampton’s director of women’s football, Marieanne Spacey-Cale, will leave the club this year.
A central figure since 2018, Spacey-Cale has held multiple roles and played a major part in shaping the women’s and girls’ pathway. As first-team coach, she helped guide Southampton to consecutive promotions in 2021 and 2022, taking the side up to the second tier. Appointed director of football in 2024, she said departing after eight remarkable years was a difficult decision.
Reports this month indicated the club is making substantial reductions to investment in the women’s team. New licensing standards introduced in 2025 for the top two tiers have increased operational demands, and several clubs have since scaled back their women’s programs after struggling to meet the criteria.
The men’s team has also faced heavy criticism following May’s “Spygate” scandal. After admitting to spying on three opponents, Southampton were expelled from the Championship play-offs, and last week head coach Tonda Eckert was charged with misconduct by the Football Association.
