MIAMI — Lionel Messi returned to the pitch for Inter Miami on Saturday, nearly two weeks after experiencing a loss with Argentina in the World Cup final.
Starting on the bench, Messi was brought on in the 53rd minute during Miami’s 2-2 draw against the Columbus Crew at Nu Stadium in Miami.
The 39-year-old substituted for Dániel Pintér, drawing a raucous ovation from the home fans as he made his comeback after participating in his sixth World Cup.
His reappearance almost turned into a fairytale moment. Just three minutes post-substitution, he connected with a pass from Luis Suárez on the right side of the penalty area. Anticipation filled the crowd as Messi unleashed a left-footed shot, only for it to drift wide of the near post, leaving everyone stunned.
A goal would have lifted Miami to a 3-1 lead, especially after Suárez, the Uruguayan veteran, had already made a significant impact in the first half. His remarkable long-range effort had given Miami the lead, and he later assisted Noah Allen to reclaim the lead just before halftime.
Columbus had earlier equalized with an own goal from Brazil midfielder Casemiro, who was making his home debut in Miami. They struck again when Brais Méndez converted a free kick in the 84th minute, ensuring Miami couldn’t secure the win.
Inter Miami’s coach, Guillermo Hoyos, acknowledged that they had let the game “slip away” in the final stages but was full of praise for his players, particularly for Messi and fellow Argentine Rodrigo De Paul.
“I want to commend the team for their efforts,” he said. “A special thank you to Leo and Rodri for their presence, which has been truly valuable for us. Additionally, I appreciate everyone’s sustained effort throughout the match. This league is incredibly competitive and demands hard work.”
Messi had an outstanding World Cup campaign, netting eight goals and providing four assists while setting numerous records.
As captain, he led Argentina to the final for the second consecutive time, playing all 120 minutes before losing 1-0 to Spain after extra time at the MetLife Stadium in New Jersey on July 19.
De Paul, who contributed 70 minutes to the final match in Argentina’s midfield, was included in Miami’s starting lineup for Saturday’s game.
He was joined by Casemiro, who also made his second appearance for Miami after transferring from Manchester United.
Despite his own goal, Hoyos still spoke highly of Casemiro, calling him “one of the best players in the world.” He highlighted the Brazilian’s ability to balance defense and attack, ensuring smooth ball distribution.
“He’s a fantastic acquisition and has the potential to bring great success to the team. This praise goes to both the player and the person; he is a wonderful individual,” he added.
Messi and De Paul both took time off following the World Cup, missing games against the Chicago Fire FC and CF Montréal. They were also excused from MLS All-Star Game selection without penalties.
The two stars returned to training with Inter Miami earlier this week. Messi’s last appearance before the World Cup was on May 24 against the Philadelphia Union.
As Inter Miami looks to close the gap on Nashville SC, who sit atop the Eastern Conference by two points, they will now focus on the Leagues Cup. The team will host Atlético de San Luis at Nu Stadium on Wednesday, followed by matches against Monterrey and León as they look to advance to the knockout stages of the tournament.
