FOXBOROUGH, Mass. — The Major League Soccer is currently investigating allegations of “antisemitic and discriminatory language” aimed at New England Revolution forward Dor Turgeman during a match against CF Montreal, the league announced on Monday.
During Saturday’s game, Turgeman was subjected to verbal “abuse” after scoring a goal in the 35th minute of a 2-2 draw in Montreal, according to statements from the Revolution.
“We promptly reported the incident to Major League Soccer and are fully supporting the investigation,” stated the Revolution. “We appreciate the league’s quick response and its commitment to tackling discrimination. We hope those responsible will face consequences for their unacceptable behavior.”
On Sunday, Montreal released a statement indicating that it has been in touch with both the league and the Revolution and is committed to investigating the matter and taking appropriate action.
Video footage of Turgeman’s goal showed him celebrating by putting his hand to his ear while accompanied by teammates. Eyewitness reports suggested that the crowd chanted phrases including “Death to Israel,” among others.
The MLS confirmed that it has engaged with both teams, stating, “Hateful language has no place in our league or in sports.”
