Despite Madrid’s discussions with the player’s representatives over the past month, the lack of progress led Barcelona to reclaim the lead in the pursuit of Spain‘s World Cup-winning captain, the source noted.
Another insider informed ESPN that Rodri’s camp felt Madrid had not demonstrated sufficient commitment to finalize a deal.
However, sources indicate that Real Madrid cannot be entirely ruled out in the race for the 2024 Ballon d’Or winner.
Rodri expressed a desire to return to Spain this summer rather than extend his contract with City and is open to joining either of the La Liga giants.
He reportedly appreciates Barcelona’s style of play and has already had discussions with coach Hansi Flick about how he would fit into the team.
In contrast, concerns arose regarding Madrid coach José Mourinho’s commitment to signing him from the outset, as noted by another source.
Madrid acknowledges that Rodri’s transfer is now complicated due to Barcelona’s interest, but the club remains poised to make one final effort to secure a deal.

A source revealed to ESPN that Barcelona sees an opportunity in their midfield following the injury to Frenkie de Jong, and Rodri has a favorable rapport with the squad at Camp Nou.
Real Madrid has been active in the current transfer window, acquiring players such as Marc Cucurella, Bernardo Silva, Ibrahima Konaté, Denzel Dumfries, and Carlos Espí. They also announced the acquisition of Yan Diomande from RB Leipzig on Thursday.
