Back in the Premier League but still chasing a first win, Reading surrendered a 4-0 lead and ultimately fell 7-5 to Arsenal.
Arsenal trailed by four inside 35 minutes, but Theo Walcott’s strike before the interval lit the fuse for a comeback that forced extra time.
Marouane Chamakh put Arsenal ahead for the first time in the opening period of extra time, only for Pavel Pogrebnyak to level at 5-5.
Walcott then restored Arsenal’s advantage and Chamakh wrapped up the scoring.
The chaos even included a comic interlude when Olivier Giroud and Francis Coquelin threw their shirts into the crowd, believing the game had finished, before sheepishly retrieving them upon realising extra time was still to come.
