Mexico clinched its second consecutive Concacaf U20 championship by defeating the United States 2-0 in the final held at Estadio Azteca in Mexico City on Sunday.
The U.S. was left with 10 men following a straight red card issued to Chris Applewhite for a sliding tackle that appeared to make minimal contact with Mexico’s Hugo Camberos after a VAR review.
Mexico initially took the lead in the 28th minute with a header from Cristóbal Alfaro before Applewhite’s dismissal.
“It’s a dream come true. While I scored, this victory is a collective achievement. I appreciate the fans for their unwavering support,” Alfaro expressed in a post-match interview. “Winning at home was an incredible experience.”
Alfaro scored again in the second half, securing Mexico’s 15th Concacaf U20 title after U.S. goalkeeper Kayne Rizvanovich mishandled a corner kick, allowing the Atlante player to head in from close range.
Mexico concluded the tournament unbeaten, conceding only one goal throughout.
This victory guarantees Mexico a spot in the 2028 Olympics, while the U.S. has already qualified as the host nation. Additionally, both teams have secured places in the 2027 U20 World Cup in Azerbaijan and Uzbekistan by reaching the semifinals.
To reach the final, Mexico overcame Canada, while the U.S. defeated Costa Rica in the other semifinal.
