Butcher drew up a bucket list of experiences he hoped to have, including watching Coritiba play at Couto Pereira with his brother-in-law.
Breathing problems and reduced mobility made that impossible, but when Coritiba heard his story, the club chose to honor him before their Serie A victory over Chapocoense.
The players’ shirts carried his name and the message: “Your strength inspires us. We stand as one.”
The design also featured a sunflower, the international symbol for hidden disabilities.
After the Brazilian national anthem, the team posed with a banner displaying Butcher’s name and signatures from Coritiba fans, players, and staff.
“We watched from England, completely overwhelmed and struggling to believe it was real,” Ana Clara told BBC Sport.
“Seeing Jonny’s name inside Couto Pereira, supported by thousands of people who had never met him, was incredibly moving.”
Coritiba said some of the shirts will be sent to Butcher’s family and to an organization that supports people with rare diseases, including MND.
Ana Clara added that Jonny wished he could shake every hand and personally thank everyone involved.
“We may never fully express our gratitude, but we hope they know this is something we’ll carry for the rest of our lives. Even in the hardest chapter, there is still so much love and kindness in the world. This will always be part of our story.”
