Liverpool has finalized the acquisition of Barcelona defender Ronald Araújo on a loan deal for the season.

According to sources, the agreement offers Liverpool the option to purchase Araújo permanently next summer for approximately €55 million. Liverpool will also manage his wages throughout the loan period, although Araújo has accepted a pay reduction to facilitate his transfer.

No loan fee has been paid by Liverpool for Araújo this season.

After completing preseason training with Barcelona, Liverpool perceives Araújo as a ready-to-go first-team option, providing valuable depth across various defensive positions.

The 27-year-old Araújo is eager to revitalize his career at Anfield after experiencing a decline in playing time at Barça over the past two years. The Reds’ new head coach, Andoni Iraola, has actively sought a defender to strengthen his defense, especially since Joe Gomez, Giovanni Leoni, and Jérémy Jacquet are recuperating from injuries.

Due to several factors, the Uruguayan international made only 16 starts last season, with Pau Cubarsí, Eric García, and Gerard Martín often selected ahead of him.

Araújo will don the No. 33 jersey for Liverpool during this campaign.

Araújo will offer additional options to Iraola, including team captain Virgil van Dijk, following the departure of Ibrahima Konaté, who left on a free transfer to Real Madrid at the end of last season.

The 6-foot-3 defender is also capable of playing at right-back, a position he occasionally occupied at Barça to counter Vinícius Júnior in El Clásico against Madrid, especially as Liverpool navigates through injuries to Conor Bradley.

After joining Barcelona’s reserve squad from Uruguayan side Boston River in 2018 for a nominal fee, Araújo has accumulated 213 first-team appearances at Barça.

Alongside Andreas Christensen, he played a pivotal role in the heart of the defense when Barcelona secured the La Liga title in the 2022-23 season under Xavi Hernández, becoming part of the club’s leadership group.

However, under coach Flick, Araújo’s playing time diminished due to form issues, injuries, and mental health challenges.

A hamstring injury sidelined him for four months at the start of the 2024-25 season, and he took a two-month hiatus last season to address anxiety and depression that had affected him for over a year.

He has earned 27 caps for Uruguay and was part of Marcelo Bielsa’s squad during this summer’s World Cup, although he did not feature as La Celeste exited in the group stage.

Sources have revealed that Liverpool is still active in the transfer market, prioritizing the acquisition of a wide forward, with Paris Saint-Germain pair Bradley Barcola and Ibrahim Mbaye among their targets.
