The supporter group Spirit of Shankly (SoS) has reached out to Liverpool, emphasizing that the ownership and management of the club are “fundamental to us all.” This communication comes as it is reported that Jeff Bezos, the founder of Amazon, is part of a consortium that may be finalizing a deal for a substantial minority stake in the club.

Despite being one of the world’s wealthiest individuals, with a personal fortune estimated at £210 billion ($283 billion) and ownership of The Washington Post and space venture Blue Origin, Bezos has no prior investment experience in sports teams. He has been linked to past potential takeovers of the NFL’s Washington Commanders and the Seattle Seahawks.

The consortium also includes Eduardo Saverin, co-founder of Facebook, and is led by Amit Bhatia, who is the son-in-law of Indian steel magnate Lakshmi Mittal. Bhatia is noted for his history in sports management, having recently stepped down as co-owner and director of Queens Park Rangers after 18 years.

In their letter, SoS requested more transparency regarding any potential changes and sought a meeting for discussions. They stated, “We emphasized that, considering the circumstances surrounding FSG’s (Fenway Sports Group) acquisition of the club, the identity of its owners and their management practices—prioritizing the interests of Liverpool FC and its supporters—are crucial for all of us.”

“The latest news about a 30% sale and the consortium’s plans is significant. The governance and stewardship of our club remain paramount for SoS and all supporters. We’ve seen similar sales at other clubs lead to substantial changes in operations and management decisions that would not be welcomed at Liverpool.”

FSG has consistently signaled openness to outside investment, with the club’s valuation soaring from the £300 million they paid in 2010 to approximately £4.5 billion today.

In 2023, Dynasty Equity acquired approximately 3% of Liverpool for around £120 million. Last month, Liverpool’s chief executive Billy Hogan informed The Athletic that principal owner John Henry “has been very upfront about considering any investment options that could benefit the club.”

“A consortium led and represented by Amit Bhatia has expressed interest in making a minority investment in the club. That’s essentially the situation,” Hogan explained.

SoS has inquired about the nature of the new investors’ involvement regarding board representation and their role in club governance, both on and off the pitch. FSG has not publicly commented since a statement last month indicating interest in a strategic minority investment from Bhatia’s consortium. A spokesperson for Bhatia’s group has also declined to comment.
